French Architecture:
Historical Significance
The University of Columbia, USA, is in Bourbonnais
studying medieval cathedral architecture.
They will spend a few years reviewing over 200
cathedrals built between the 12th and 13th centuries,
following which, they will study chateaux.
It is important that we appreciate these
structures, rich in medieval architecture.
Owners are entrusted with their preservation.

FRANCE
Le Bourbonnais /Auvergne
(Central Region: Bourges, Montlucon, Moulins, Vichy, Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand)
Auvergne - A well kept secret. Welcome
to the Beautiful Countryside! Not as stylish or as well known as Provence to the south east, Auvergne is an agrarian, open country atmosphere, a little bit south and east of the geographical center of France. The Massif Central,,, Auvergne...which lumps many rugged separate mountain ranges into one identifiable unit. It includes three departments: the Puy-de-D™me, Cantal, Haute-Loir, and part of two more, Aveyron and Allier. Four great rivers flow from the Auvergne: the Loire, the Cher, the Dordogne, and the Lot. The area is known for good skiing, its unspoiled remoteness, its purity and beauty. And lately there have emerged some fine regional restaurants. The Auvergne is the source of the most stunning array of cheeses in the world. And the region produces huge quantities of fruit and vegetables. There is a great feeling of tranquility to be found in the quiet little medievil towns throughout the area. And, there are the beautiful architectural structures from centuries past, beckoning those seeking the aesthetic pleasures of ownership. Bienvenue! — Robert Kissig |

A region rich in history, culture and geography. Until the late 18th century Burgundy was not part of France, but a Dukedom with the powerful and long reigning Burgundy Dukes. One time allies to the English kings against the French king. The Burgundy frontiers stretched across eastern France and into Flanders. The Cistercian influence is also very significant, with many abbeys and monasteries such as Cluny, Fontennay and Citeaux. Wine is one of the pillars and pride of Burgundy, with some of the most famous wines in the world coming from the concentrated vineyards. The Romans introduced grapes and the production was mastered by the local monks. Farming is dominated by cereal crops in the Saone plain and Nivernais plateaux, whilst in the hill areas the is much cattle farming with the traditional white Charolais. The diverse geography, with the Morvan park and it's cold granite to the calcaire Saone valley. There is much woodland and forest, in the Cote d'Or, Oak whilst in the Morvan there is Red Pine. The important rivers such as the Saone and Yonne allowing access to the Rhone and Seine have provided the region with important boat transport communication via the canals and rivers. |
